September: A lull between the seasons
You know, the transition months can be a delight to fish here in the Panhandle. In September, you can expect the occasional cool snap followed by drier air, bringing that “Fall is here” feeling. As an outdoorsman, you learn to appreciate these weather changes, and personally, I’ve grown to look forward to them.
From a fishing standpoint, I view September as the 7th inning stretch. The fish are getting a breather from the summer madness, and the fishermen are too. Fishing in the Panhandle during September is really just a continuation of the previous month. Almost all species that were here in August are still around in September, with the exception of tarpon (although you might pick up a straggler).
September is also a great time to do some scouting for October and make sure all your ducks are in a row for the annual fishing rodeo! As a charter guide, I like to do a few buddy trips in September as the crowds are thinning and the fishing is usually pretty good.
Use this September wisely; before you know it, it’ll be blowing and 40 degrees!
Happy September fishing!
